Interests include endocrine surgery such as minimally invasive parathyroidectomy for hyperparathyroidism, laparoscopic and retroperitoneal adrenalectomy for adrenal masses, and thyroid nodule management with ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration and minimally invasive thyroid surgery. In breast care, this includes assessment of lumps with ultrasound-guided biopsy and cyst aspiration, oncoplastic surgery to enhance cosmetic outcomes, and latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction. General surgery interests cover keyhole and open hernia repairs as well as laparoscopic gallbladder removal.

Mitcham Private Hospital would like to introduce, Mr Michael Cheng, an accomplished and well-established general surgeon with an interest in breast and endocrine surgery.

Michael has been in private practice for over 10 years and speaks fluent Mandarin and Cantonese. He holds VMO appointments at Box Hill Hospital and Maroondah BreastScreen.

Being one of the first surgeons in Melbourne to perform office ultrasound guided biopsies for breast and thyroid lesions, Michael has instructed in surgeon-performed ultrasound courses. He was a finalist in the inaugural Astra Zeneca Breast Care Award. In addition, Michael is an advisor to the Chinese Cancer Support Group of Victoria (CSV).

Michael graduated with honours from Monash University in 1992. He became the first in his graduate class to complete the FRACS in General Surgery (1997-2003).
