Advanced Laser Surgery at Mitcham Private Hospital delivers breakthrough solution for enlarged prostate
Jul 01, 2011
A new, state of art laser treatment is now available at Mitcham Private Hospital, providing relief for men suffering from the frustrating urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), this common, non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate affects more than half of all men over the age of 60.
Symptoms include difficulty in urinating, a reduced urine stream, straining to urinate, frequency of urination, and a feeling that the bladder never completely empties all of which can have a devastating impact on quality of life.
Although BPH is a common health problem, many men lack awareness and understanding about the condition, symptoms, treatment solutions and overall health risks with delaying treatment.
Until now treatment options for BPH typically have been limited to a lifetime of medication or an invasive surgical procedure. An advance in medical technology now offers men with BPH the option to choose a minimally invasive surgical treatment known as GreenLight Laser Therapy.
The laser combines the effectiveness of the traditional invasive surgical procedure, Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) with fewer side effects, offering short hospital stays and a return to normal non-strenuous activities within days. The treatment will offer a safer alternative to traditional procedures.
"Choosing a treatment for enlarged prostate involves careful consideration, balancing the effectiveness, duration and side effects of the various options. With Green Light Laser Therapy, BPH patients no longer need to compromise on the effectiveness or the safety of a treatment, and in addition they have a shorter hospital stay" says Urological Surgeon, Associate Professor Damien Bolton, of Mitcham Private Hospital.
The greatest benefit to men treated with GreenLight Laser Therapy is freedom from the obstructive urinary symptoms that accompany BPH.
"The Green Light laser procedure has been proven safe and effective in clinical studies conducted at many leading medical institutions around the world. To date, over 500, 000 patients have been treated worldwide with GreenLight Laser Therapy" says Urological Surgeon, Associate Professor Nathan Lawrentschuk, of Mitcham Private Hospital.
"We are really proud to be offering such a breakthrough treatment that will benefit so many men suffering from BPH" say Mitcham Private CEO, Darren Rogers. "GreenLight Laser Therapy compliments the expanding range of state of the art procedures being offered at Mitcham Private Hospital"
