One stop breast screening and diagnostics

At Mitcham Private Hospital, you have one stop access to comprehensive services both for women at risk of breast cancer (risk assessment) and those experiencing symptoms (diagnostic assessment). Patients are assured of a comfortable, streamlined experience, confident in the knowledge that they are benefiting from the care and expertise of a highly skilled team.

This service, Mitcham BreastCare is unique in the local area. The service allows GPs to refer for rapid expert assessment of any Breast problems. This includes breast lumps, breast pain, nipple discharge or any unexplained changes.

The patient will be seen by one of a team of surgeons within two working days of referral, and diagnostic imaging will occur on the same day as the consultation. Radiology team, Imaging Associates Mitcham (based within Mitcham Private Hospital) are able to offer patients priority access to a technological breakthrough in breast cancer detection which delivers a full field 3D digital mammography.

Results are then reviewed by one of our team of local Breast Surgeons in conjunction with the Imaging team. Further diagnostic or intervention then occurs as appropriate. This allows a rapid one stop comprehensive service delivered within two working days of referral.

The service was initiated following general practice feedback that there was often a delay between diagnostic testing and patient consultation, which can be an extremely stressful time for the patient. The local surgeons involved in the service Mr Michael Cheng, Mr Sunil Jassal, Mr Michael Law, Dr Vivian Yu and Miss Natalie Zantuck see this service as an opportunity to provide rapid access to high quality diagnostics and treatment when required.

Our breast surgeons apply the triple test approach. This is the recommended approach to the investigation of a breast change or symptom and has been shown to be 99.8% accurate in the diagnosis of breast cancer*.

It includes

  1. Clinical History and Breast Examination
  2. Mammogram and/or Ultrasound (3D Digital Mammography and Tomosynthesis now available)
  3. Fine Needle Aspiration and/or Core Biopsy

Imaging Associates Mitcham (IAM) is an independent, radiologist owned and operated practice, located onsite at Mitcham Private Hospital, offering state of the art breast screening and diagnostic services.

Not all women will require all three tests to investigate their breast change. The number and choice of tests required will depend on factors such as the nature of the breast change, the age of the patient and the results of individual tests. Our doctors will discuss the need for particular tests as your visit progresses.
