Mitcham Private Hospital Launches State-Of-The-Art Sleep Disorder Centre

Mitcham Private Hospital is proud to announce the launch of a redeveloped and enhanced sleep disorder service, offering an even greater breadth of valuable medical services to patients in Melbourne.

Located onsite at Mitcham Private Hospital in a dedicated stand alone unit, the centre has been operational since 1998, providing evaluation and treatment of all sleep-related medical disorders, including:

• Obstructive and central sleep apnoea
• Periodic limb movements of sleep
• Narcolepsy
• Insomnia
• Parasomnias (i.e. sleepwalking, night terrors)

Following an extensive redevelopment in May 2011, the Centre now features a new, state of the art Compumedics sleep laboratory with digital recording and scoring equipment to enable full Level 1 diagnostic and CPAP-titration studies.  The Centre has also been refurbished to offer the best possible sleep conditions for an optimum sleep study. All three private overnight sleep rooms have been furnished with hotel quality king single beds, modern soft furnishings, flat screen TVs and integrated décor, with access to a comfortable sitting area and mini kitchen.  In addition, the service has been expanded to offer greater flexibility for patients and referring doctors and specialists. The Centre will increase the hours of operation to up to 7 days a week, to prevent excessive waiting times, and to accommodate a growing team of experienced sleep and respiratory specialists. 

Mitcham Private Hospital is ISO 9001 certified, meeting international core standards for safety and quality in healthcare.  The Centre supported by accredited sleep and respiratory physicians and operated by experienced sleep nurses and technicians, offering complete clinical assessments, overnight polysomnography (Sleep Study) and evaluation and assessment of treatment options.

Sleep disorders are a large and under recognised problem in Australia. According to a report by Access Economics for Sleep Health Australia, approximately 1.2 million Australians experience sleep disorders, and sleep disorders can underlie:

• 9.1% of work-related injuries
• 8.3% of depression
• 7.6% of non work-related motor vehicle accidents
• 2.9% of diabetes
• 0.9% of kidney disease
• 0.6% of cardiovascular disease.

NOTE: All sleep studies at Mitcham Private Sleep Centre need to be referred to an accredited respiratory/sleep physician. Other Respiratory and Sleep Physicians and specialists are welcome to refer directly to the service for sleep studies.

Referring doctors receive a detailed report of the overnight sleep study with interpretation by the reporting Respiratory/Sleep Physician. The Mitcham Private Sleep Centre has close links with other specialists skilled in the management of sleep disorders including ENT surgeons, specialist dentist and sleep psychologists.
