Mitcham Private Hospital CEO Sleeping Rough To Support The Homeless

Tuesday, 7 June 2011

CEO of Mitcham Private Hospital, Darren Rogers, will get a first hand experience of what it’s like to be homeless next week when he spends a night out in the cold for the second annual Vinnies CEO Sleepout in Melbourne. The event will be held in cities across Australia simultaneously on Thursday 16 June 2011, with the Melbourne event taking place on the concourse at Etihad Stadium.

CEO of VincentCare Victoria (part of the St Vincent de Paul Society), John Blewonski said “There’s been a 9% increase in people using our lunch meals program at Ozanam Community Centre in this financial year alone. With increased utility costs, rising interest rates and other pressures mounting up, it really is an issue that can affect anyone these days.”

Formalities on the night include a panel discussion on homelessness and speeches from people who have experienced homelessness.

Darren has taken up the challenge and says “I really think that this will give me a glimpse of the realities that face 100,000 Australians who are without adequate housing. I have some soup from a soup van to look forward to, but other than that and my beanie and cardboard, it will be a cold, eye-opening night!”

The Vinnies CEO Sleepout is designed to raise awareness about homelessness and funds for Vinnies’ homeless services. The funds are raised by participants seeking sponsorship.

“Last year we had 116 participants and raised $414,000 which was a great effort in our first year, but we need to exceed that this year to keep up with the increased demand we’re facing.”
