If at any stage during your pregnancy you are worried about
yourself or your baby, or you think you may be in labour,
contact the maternity unit on 03 9210 3111.
When you are in need of urgent care:
• If you require urgent care contact 000 immediately.
You should contact your obstetrician or call the Maternity Unit if:
• your baby stops moving or there is a change in your baby’s normal movement
patterns in a day
• your waters break or if you have a constant clear watery vaginal discharge.
Or if you experience:
• vaginal bleeding
• fever, chills or a temperature
higher than 37.8° C
• persistent headaches
• blurred vision or spots before your eyes
• sharp pains in the abdomen
(with or without bleeding)
• pain or burning when you pass urine
• irregular contractions at any time
• sudden swelling of your face,
hands, ankles or fingers
• persistent itchy skin
• any trauma such as assault,
a car accident or a serious fall.
Pregnancy, labour, birth and early
parenting are exciting and significant life
events and it is a privilege to share these
with you. At Mitcham Private Hospital,
we pride ourselves on providing quality

to new or extended parenting roles.
We offer a comprehensive antenatal
program. Our antenatal program
consists of two classes and an online
module. Classes are conducted on site
by experienced midwives for pregnant
women and their partner/support
person. The classes and information
contained in this booklet will give you the
opportunity to learn more about what to
expect during pregnancy, labour, birth,
feeding and caring for your baby.
Our team of doctors and midwives
will assist you in creating an optimal
environment to enrich your birth
experience. We believe women should
be well informed about all the available
options during pregnancy, childbirth and
early parenting so you and your partner
can make informed decisions as you
transition to parenthood.

childbirth and parent education classes.
