After the birth Your midwife will observe your baby’s wellbeing and determine the APGAR Score by assessing the following: • breathing • heart rate • response to stimuli • colour • muscle tone Additional support with oxygen and suction will be given if required. Your midwife will • Check the completeness of the placenta and membranes Your obstetrician will • Examine the birth canal for any cuts or tears • Perform a surgical repair of the vagina and/or perineum if required (usually performed under local anaesthetic in the Birthing Suites). Skin to skin contact is encouraged at this time for at least one hour. This will be an opportunity to take photos and/or video. You will also be offered light refreshments such as tea and toast. Your midwife will continue to monitor you and your baby, while at the same time allowing you privacy and bonding time. Your baby will then be weighed, measured and dressed once he/she has breast fed. Your midwife will assist you to the shower, then you and your baby will be transferred to a postnatal room. Your partner’s role during labour As a birthing partner, your presence and support is empowering to the mother and to the birth process. You can help the mother make decisions about her care and provide practical support such as: • helping her to change positions • offering food and drinks • massaging her back, neck, shoulders and feet to help her relax • ensuring she is comfortable • helping with breathing and visualisation techniques • helping her into the shower and support with use of gymnoball if desired You can provide emotional support by: • reassuring her that she is doing well • telling her what is happening • being respectful of her need to rest between contractions as labour progresses You can initiate relaxation skills by: • staying close • maintaining eye contact • remaining positive even if you feel panicky • helping her to focus on breathing • speaking calmly and quietly Your partner may cut the cord if they wish (under the direction of your obstetrician or midwife).
